4 Tips To Learn and Advance Your English Vocabulary
Vocabulary is a collection of words. Vocabulary gives beauty to a content and makes it meaningful and attractive. Rich and robust vocabulary will enable you to speak your ideas better, understand spoken language and perform better in daily contexts, in school settings and in English vocabulary and proficiency tests. Let’s take a glimpse of three steps through which you can spot, learn and practice new English words.
Read for English Vocabulary
If there is one secret to building English vocabulary for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners of English, it’s reading. It would be best if you aimed to read for at least half an hour per day. To start learning new English words, you must understand what is interesting to you. You can pick any topic which attracts you like movies, cooking, novels, cars, stories, etc. You can find stuff in magazines, storybooks, biographies and internet blogs. While reading, there will be many words that you don’t understand. For problematic words, try to guess the meaning from the context. If you fail, select/underline the words that you don’t know. This is the first step to improve your English vocabulary.
Write Down New English Words
This is where you will start learning new English words. Go back to the text which you have read. Collect 5 to 10 words every day if you want to improve your English vocabulary. Once you have done it, write those words in a notebook or vocab cards and start finding their meaning along with definition, part of speech (whether it is a verb, noun etc) as well as their pronunciation. Make at least two sentences using the word. If you are an advanced learner, you can also find the synonyms and antonyms of your chosen words.
Review English Vocabulary
The last step for preserving and enriching your vocabulary is a review. Learning new English words and bringing them into your active vocabulary is a challenging task even for advanced learners. You can achieve this by reviewing those words regularly. Pick one day of the week and on that day, start revising the English words you have learned that week. As you read further, you will encounter those words you have learnt and it will be easier to remember and make sense of those English words.
Take English Vocabulary Tests
As a beginner, intermediate or advanced learner, one of the best ways of enriching and reviewing your vocabulary is taking English vocabulary tests and exercises.
